Tangent Art Gallery is an artist-run gallery/studio space
established June 2007. Designed and built in a corner shop that once housed a Safeway, Tangent is a modest gallery with three simple goals: To display dynamic and compelling
modern art by local and non-local artists, to give back to the neighborhood in which they established the gallery by attracting commerce and visitors, and to serve to community of Sacramento by offering art that, in many cases, other local galleries have been unwilling to display.

Tangent is an artist-run gallery/studio space established June of 2007. We’ve worked hard to create quite a nice little gallery in the corner of a building that originally was a Safeway. Here follows our three goals to give you a better idea of whom we are and what we are trying to accomplish as an art space.

1. Tangent exhibits dynamic and compelling contemporary art, by both local artists and artists from afar, specifically art that may not be showcased in other Sacramento galleries. We are in a unique position to exhibit challenging or less traditional art works because we are not solely driven by sales. We value formal quality, artistic originality and potent concepts in the art we choose to show.

2. Tangent strives to serve the community of Sacramento. We aspire to expose the art viewing public to new ideas, mediums and forms. We also hope to inspire our viewers to think about the work we show and engage in a vigorous dialogue about art. We exhibit work within a wide price range, from very inexpensive ($20) to quite expensive ($2000). In either case, the gallery commission is smaller than most, in an effort to encourage sales and be generous to the artists. Aside from exhibiting visual art, Tangent has hosted a few very special, intimate and free acoustic music events. Furthermore, we frequently curate themed group shows and call upon the public for entries, thus fostering increased art making and creativity in our community. Additionally, Tangent hosts a monthly working artist critique group. In the coming months we hope to offer adult and children’s art classes and workshops as well.

3. Tangent brings something unique and positive to the neighborhood while attracting new visitors to the area. Tangent is located on the corner of Franklin Blvd and Fourth Avenue between the neighborhoods of Curtis Park and Oak Park. This is area is ripe and ready for exciting new businesses. We exist through the passionate vision and generous entrepreneurial spirit of Michael Madsen, owner of The Coffee Garden, which is located next door. He has entrusted the monthly operations of the gallery to the three artists who work within the studio spaces of Tangent: Aaron Brown, Ianna Frisby and Gioia Fonda. This gallery is truly a labor of love as we work for Tangent pro-bono in addition to our individual careers outside the gallery. Between the three artists, we share more than 16 years of art education, five art degrees and have the student loans to prove it. Our combined experiences represent a wide variety of aesthetic inclinations and make our collaboration all the more interesting and unpredictable.

If you have any further questions about Tangent you may contact either Gioia Fonda at 956-2491 or Ianna Frisby at 662-4208, but please do not make these numbers available to the public. You may also contact us or set up a gallery viewing appointment via email at tangentgallery@gmail.com

Thank you.
